Creative Retreat Kits | Written on My Heart

DSCF3104

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”

-2 Timothy 3:16-17

Does anyone else still get excited to receive mail, like I do? I don’t mean the piles of junk mail, credit card offers and stacks of coupons. I mean real, actual mail from one person to another? There is nothing quite like receiving a hand-written letter or card. This time of year, when sparky Christmas cards fill our box, my heart just about overflows.

A hand-written note or letter tells you that you matter. It tells you that you are worth spending the time to connect with. It shows that you are remembered. It tells you that you are loved and important enough to share in what is contained in that envelope or package. It takes thought and effort to send real mail… to write a real letter.

Did you know that the Bible is basically God’s letter, to us? He loves and cares so very much for us that he wants to connect with us through his word. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 tells us that Scripture is God-breathed. It goes on to tell us how very useful and important it is in our lives. The Bible is not only here to encourage, inspire and guide us, but it’s also here to correct our paths, to train us and to prepare us for whatever comes before us. That is one POWERFUL letter. Let’s not take it for granted!

The December Faith Art box provides all the beautiful tools to celebrate the word of God. The colors are beautiful soft jewel tones and are so pretty when combined. When I think of God’s word, I think of His heart for me and my heart for him so I wanted to be sure to use a big heart in my entry.

I started by using the ink smooshing technique to smoosh in about 5 or 6 colors of Distress Oxide Inks. It was a lot of different colors but I love how these just blended and flowed into each other. After that dried, I started my title with the wordfetti and alpha stickers from the kit spelling out “His Word is Written…”

I wanted to be sure to get some stamping in so I grabbed the various word stamps from the kit and stamped them in flowing blocks with Brilliance Moonlight White pigment ink. I started with the phrase “On My” repeated over and over. Then, I finished with some other phrases repeated about the word.

Next came my super fun heart. I used a heart punch to punch out a heart from some paper that has a bunch of text on it. I then glued it to three layers of pink tissue paper. I rough cut around it, leaving about a half an inch of tissue all the way around. Next, I used my fringe scissors to cut all the way around and make this delicate fringe border.

DSCF3111

I secured that to my page and added a few heart stickers on top. I finished off my page by tracing my stickers and my heart with a black journaling pen, using some “stitch” marks around my verse as well.

I finished with a little cluster at the top of my page that consist of a circle punched out of the devotional card, a few stickers, a heart from the same scrapbook paper, all secured with a bit of the silver feather washi tape from the kit.

Friends, my prayer for you is that you spend the time to read God’s letter to you. I pray that his words wash over your heart and bring you comfort, guidance, wisdom and truth. Let his Word guide you and reveal his plans for you. You are so very dear and loved.

Creative Retreat Kits | A Season of Preparation

My Post

Now that we are halfway through the month I’ve heard that quite a lot of people using the November Faith Art Box to document Advent. I just loved that idea so I decided to do something similar and use the kit with a sort of “mini series” about preparation for this wonderful season of joy, celebration, anticipation and gratitude.

This season holds a special place in many people’s hearts and I am no exception. I have always loved Christmas, though the reason behind that love has changed and evolved as I have matured. As a child, of course, the draw of presents and treats was almost electric. Now that I am grown and have children of my own, I get the double joy of watching them experience the wonder of Christmas in its twinkle and treats, and to help them understand, as I have learned, that the best gift we could ever receive is the love and salvation of our Savior. Thank you God for sending your son for us!

This season, I am preparing my heart for all of the many facets that this season offers, in experiences and in remembrance of the tiny King who came to save. As I mentioned, I did a series of 7 mini entries using the kit, and I love how each one has both special meaning and slightly different look. This was great because it allowed for in depth bible study and a short creative time to finish – which is ideal in this busy time of year. It also helped for pages that already had a mini entry (much of my current bible has entries from Lent) .

DSCF3086

I wanted each entry to have it’s own unique look and feel but have a common thread. In this case it was the same color scheme, a few lines of personal journaling, and a date stamp to document each day.

DSCF3087

I didn’t do tabs for each of my entries, but I couldn’t resist using this sticker from the kit as a little medallion at the top, secured with a little washi tape (I got rid of the stickyness on the back using the EK Success Powder tool).

I also wanted to be sure to us ALL the elements in the kit. I mentioned in my last post that I always sort of forget about the stamps so I decided to be sure to use them as often as I could… though I just fell in love with the pine branch stamps and used them almost exclusively! The entry above had a little white embossing in the title too and I love how that turned out.

DSCF3092

For the entry above it doesn’t show AT ALL in photos but I layered both brilliant white and platinum pigment ink stamping using the cute star stamp in the kit. It makes for a great background with a subtle, shimmery pop.

I also dug around in my stash to find some coordinating enamel dots, another item I always forget to use. I love how they look like little festive pops of candy here. I also just HAD to use that cute mini leather bow. How fun is this delicate silhouette?!

DSCF3098

I did a little ink smooshing on this page with the Distress Oxide inks I used in my last post as well. I just loved how they coordinated with the kit and gave a soft wash of green. And black splatters… a must. 😉

DSCF3100

Sometimes, a little washi tape is all you need to tie a title together. I had about two minutes for the entry above so that’s all I could do, and I sort of love this simple, sweetness of this. These entries really allowed me to focus on the scripture first.

DSCF3102

Right when I saw those pine branch stamps I envisioned a wreath so I knew it would happen at some point. This is probably my favorite little entry of all of them. I love that little wreath, and I ALWAYS love the message of hope. Now, and every time of the year.

I didn’t follow a study for this series, I actually just did my own research and tried to focus on the things I wanted to be sure to prepare for this season. These verses really meant a lot to me and I hope you can take the time to check them out for yourself:

  • Prepare for REDEMPTION:  John 1:29
  • Prepare for HOPE:  Romans 5:1-5
  • Prepare for WORSHIP:  Matthew 2:1-2
  • Prepare him ROOM:  Luke 2:6-7
  • Prepare for JOY:  Luke 1:14-15
  • Prepare for MIRACLES:  Matthew 1:18-25
  • Prepare for his FAVOR:  Luke 1:26-38

Friends, I pray that you take some special time to prepare your heart to celebrate our King this season. I pray that God reveals to you the areas that you need to focus on and that you feel deeply how much he loves you and wants you to draw close to him. May you find the time and words to share with those you love how valuable this precious gift of salvation is.

Be blessed friends!

Creative Retreat Kits | One True King

DSC_3720

“But the Lord is the true God;
he is the living God and the everlasting King.
At his wrath the earth quakes.
and the nations cannot endure his indignation.”

Jeremiah 10:10

I’m not a huge consumer of junk food… but I do have a mean sweet tooth. Do you remember several years back when Hostess announced that it was closing it’s doors? Now, I wouldn’t say I was devastated or anything, but I will admit that I was bummed. Bummed because those chocolate cupcakes with the white swirl on top were one of my guilty pleasures. We all have those little things that are probably just not that appealing, but end up being a bit of a vice.

I used to allow myself a package of those every once in a while as a treat, OR when I donated blood. I could always count on the blood bank to have my favorite treats. So when Hostess announced it was quits, I thought I would be devoid of my indulgence forever. It wasn’t a short time later that that “imitators” started popping up in vending machines and storefronts.

I was reluctant, but I gave them a try. They were NOT my indulgence. They were dry. They were sort of tasteless and weirdly sticky. They were not Hostess. They were in fact just imitators. There are SO MANY imitators in our life. Things that promise they are real and satisfying. But when you look down deep, they are just that, fakes. Thankfully we have the Holy Spirit to guide us to truth. There is nothing that reveals truth better than our God!

Jeremiah 10:10 describes our God as the ONE TRUE GOD. There is nothing artificial, tasteless or fake about Him. He is great. He is powerful. He is above all. Better than that he is the LIVING GOD that is above all. Living means that he still acts and intercedes for us every day. He doesn’t just sit back and watch our lives unfold. He is active and present in them.

For my page this week I decided to go royal and honor our one true King. I started by using the ink smooshing technique (smooshing ink onto plastic packaging, spraying a bit of water on it and “smooshing” it on the page several times). I used Distress Oxide ink in Faded Jeans. I LOVE this color of blue and it coordinated with the kit just perfectly.

DSC_3721

Next I decided to do a little bit of hand lettering with a gold American Crafts marker. Lettering is NOT my strength but I felt like that was the only way to do it for spelling out the title King and I’m actually happy with how it turned out. I added a few other alphas and wordfetti from the kit to spell out “He is the one true King”.

DSC_3725

I went in drew a box around my verse and drew a few little gold stars with the marker and then hit the whole page with some gold splatters using a Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolor in Blue Gold.

I finished the page off with a little sparkly gold washi tape, that sweet blue bow from the kit and the One True King medallion sticker.

DSC_3726

This was a quick and simple entry but I really like how it turned out. The blue and gold combo is one of my faves.

DSC_3727

Friends, I pray that you know and celebrate the one true God and King in your lives. I pray that you know of his power and might but feel his compassion and love for you. Do not settle for cheap imitators and fakes to full any holes in your life. He is above all and will cover all. He is the King of your heart.

Be blessed, friends!
